Stack systems are specifically designed to be of a modular design, which is an approach with a number of inherent advantages over other types of PC based or rack mounted systems:

• Because the systems are modular, additional capability can simply be added by purchasing additional modules.
  
• Costs can be minimised on a system purchase as you only need purchase the modules you need to complete a project. Modules can be easily added as future projects demand.
  
• Weight, as well as the effect it has can be minimised, with a modular approach facilitating the location of equipment around a vehicle being monitored to ensure an even distribution.
  
• Harnessing can also be minimised, having the ability to place modules in proximity to associated sensors, with only a 4-wire interface between modules.

The systems modules are all connected together by a CAN (Controller area Network) bus. This is similar to networking PC's together in an office, but CAN is a much more robust protocol, specifically designed for use in automotive and other harsh environments. Some of the benefits of a CAN based modular system include:

• Many modules can be connected on a common bus, and data can be shared between the modules
  
• CAN is an error-correcting protocol for robust performance in harsh environments
  
• Only a 4 wire interface between modules - 2 for power and 2 for the CAN communication - minimises harness weight, cost and complexity
  
• Modules can be distributed around the vehicle, to minimise sensor wiring, enhancing reliability and reducing weight
  
• CAN is standard around the world, enabling interface with other CAN networks
