Company History
The company's original founders, Trevor Tapping and Alan Rock previously worked for a local Bicester engineering company specialising in microprocessor based products. In 1983, when an ex-colleague with his own software business required some hardware, the two decided they could meet the brief and set up a part-time business. So many contracts were received for this hardware - PROM programmers which are used to transfer the information of a software program into a chip - that Stack Ltd became a full-time operation in 1984. Tapping and Rock planned to offer a design consultancy service to finance their own product developments. The first product development took a further year, and Stack Ltd's first PROM programmer was produced in 1985.
Through consultancy work for local motor racing teams, Alan Rock and Trevor Tapping had first hand experience of the motor sport industry, prominent in Oxfordshire. Working with racing car constructors, they saw an obvious need for improvement in what was a very long established product, the tachometer. Existing instruments were just not accurate enough to meet the requirements of modern motor racing. Stack's first product was the ST400 Recording Tachometer, which in it’s day provided the only on-vehicle solution for accurate, digital RPM display and engine parameter logging.

Stack Future
On July 9th 2007, it was announced that Stack Limited was acquired by Auto Meter Products, Inc.
Stack Managing Director, Alan Rock commented:, “(Fellow Founder) Trevor (Tapping) and I have a strong team, of which we’re very proud. Stack designs and produces arguably the best products on the market, and now, with the support of the larger Auto Meter organisation, we’ll be able to accelerate that development and improve our behind-the-scenes operations to better serve our customers across the globe. We’ve had several opportunities to partner with different companies over the years, but the opportunities this relationship with Auto Meter and Harbour Group provides to accelerate new product development and better serve our customers was too great to ignore. We’re very excited.”
